Teachers who touch students hearts.

There are teachers in everyone's life that have helped them through tough times. I had two teachers in high school which helped not only me but my whole family through one of the toughest times in our lives. During my sophomore year, my mother and brothers were hit head on by a drunk driver not a mile from our home. the two choir teachers at my high school helped my come to terms with the accident and also helped us through the long coma and recovery process. These two teachers touched my life through their kind words of encouragement and the way they took care of our family through that time. That is the type of teacher I want to be, I want the students I teach to feel that I am someone they can talk to. I want to be able to provide a home away from home feeling for the students, giving them a sense of security in our classroom. How can I provide this sense of security for students when there are so many unknowns in the world today? How, with the economic problems, can the student's parents afford to provide the students with the supplies they need for school? I know that being a teacher means being selfless when with the students and having a firm hand when it comes to the classroom discipline. What teachers have you had that have touched your lives? Have there been teachers who, you have felt, have gone passed the duties of a teacher and helped you after they have fulfilled their teaching duties? Most importantly, how have your teachers touched your lives not only in a school setting but also outside of the walls of the school?

  1. I do believe that teachers do have a huge effect on a student's life. Sometimes it may be more than they know. My junior year of high school, I hadn't thought much about going to college and pursuing an undergraduate degree. My family owns businesses and I had planned on just working for one of them but it was my english teacher who pushed me to follow my dreams. She always told me that from how I interacted with my peers in the classrooms and how I carried myself, I would be something special and she encouraged me to chase my dream of becoming a teacher.

  2. That post touched my heart! I think it will be alot easier for you to help your students because it's someone else. I'm not sure if that makes any sense but what I mean is it's easier to give advice to someone else and not yourself. As far as money goes in this.. basically depression there is this website called freecycle.org and I thought it would be mostly junk but people were posting ads for beds, dressers, cameras and a lot of other things. So then I posted I want a microphone for my computer and I didn't check my email for a day and ended up going and buying one but when I finally checked my messages I had three replies about people wanting to give me their old microphones. If nothing else you could suggest this website, show them how to be frugal. Thanks for reading all that I know it was a lot.

  3. I agree with your thoughts on the fact that teachers have the power to change and have an impact for the better on their students' lives. That is precisely the main reason I have decided to become a teacher because I want to be the type of teacher that makes a difference in the lives of my students. I had planned on majoring in something in the business field, but then I realized that I was doing so for superficial reasons like a decent salary and so forth and I realized that I wanted to do something where I could actually make a difference in someone's life and what better way to do that than to become a teacher. I do think teachers have a big responsibility to be excellent role models for their students because for some kids it could be the only positive role model they have and with all the negative role models in society today it wouldn't help to have a person to look up to in their own classroom.- Ryan Huels

  4. Thanks you guys, I knew that there were websites out there where you could get needed items for cheap but had never checked them out. I'll definitely check out the freecycle.org site.

  5. I think teachers do play an important role in a student's life. My story is little bit different. It involves a tutor/teacher at Harper College. I got tutored by Brad so many times that I can't even count during my sophomore year at the community college. He helped me a lot during that semester, not just book base stuff but also like his real life experience. He was able to convey his message by sharing his experience. After realizing what he had done for me, I decided to become a tutor and help out students with their educational need. Today, I am a Professional Tutor at Harper College Tutoring Center. I started as a student tutor but then got promoted to a Professional Tutor. And now I drive back to Palatine (45-50 Miles) on Thursdays to work with him as a tutor. I think this was possible because he gave me the courage that I can be a tutor and I can help out others. My tutoring experience has helped me a lot when I was looking for an Academic Internship in the field of Accounting. I enjoyed working with him and he is willing to help me out whenever I need help.

  6. I had a teacher in High school that would sit and talk to me on her period off during my senior year. this was a tough time because my parents had just gotten divorced and i needed someone older to talk to, someone more experienced with life. I feel that teachers should go above and beyond what they are expected, it can make a huge difference in a students life.-Heather wagner
